Trellis Creative Arts Magazine

In 2011, Ivy Tech Community College Evansville published its first Creative Arts magazine. Named Trellis, it showcased work from graphic design, interior design, photography and writing students. As a part of the project, graphic design students were tasked with creating a prospective layout for the magazine, logo, color scheme, font selection and layout style. I was honored to discover that my layout proposal was selected.

After selection I worked with faculty advisors and a local print shop to create and produce the final book. This was the first professionally printed piece of work I created and it turned out to be a fantastic learning experience. Later than year I was honored to receive not only a gold award at the American Advertising Federation of Greater Evansville Addy awards but also a Judges Choice award for outstanding student work.

Process

It began with the logo. I wanted to complement the idea of a trellis, a structure which supports plants (such as ivy) was they grow. I took several approaches to this before I settled on the abstracted boxes that comprised the final logo.

Website

After the design was chosen and the magazine was in publication, the web design class was tasked with creating a website showcasing the magazines work. I was in the interesting position of not only creating a website based on my own work, but watching my classmates interpreting my work in their own style. While ultimately there was no website officially published it was enlightening to see my work in the hands of others.

My design, shown below, featured my original cover concept (which was I updated during publication) with links located around the bounds of the logo. A javascript ran to reveal photos in each frame which when complete replicated the finished cover.
